In the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi stressed that it is necessary to mobilize the whole Party and society to target poverty alleviation. With the promotion of target poverty alleviation, China’s media carried out a large number of propaganda films and documentaries to report poverty alleviation work, which shows the media’s concern for poverty alleviation and their belief in overcoming poverty. China: Prescription for Poverty, produced by Xinhua News Agency in 2021, is a large-scale documentary on China’s poverty alleviation. It details the great efforts and remarkable achievements of poverty alleviation with real cases and is full of a positive tone. This thesis studies it from the perspective of multimodality and positive discourse analysis. It gives the audience a deep understanding and positive attitude towards it and provides implications for telling China’s poverty alleviation.

In multimodal discourse analysis, Martin’s Appraisal Theory and Kress & Van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar are important theoretical foundations for positive discourse analysis of text and image mode. This study takes these two theories as the theoretical framework and uses UAM Corpus Tool and ELAN to study how the text mode and image mode construct a positive discourse in documentary.

It is found that: text mode conveys positive meaning to the audience mainly through the attitude system, especially through the appreciation resource to describe the poverty alleviation work positively. The engagement system uses the expansion resources to introduce the external voices’ positive comments on China’s poverty alleviation. The graduation system mainly uses force resources to present great achievements of poverty alleviation. The representational meaning in image mode mainly uses narrative process to show people’s actions, reactions and verbal and mental processes to express people’s satisfaction with their present life. In interactive meaning, it firstly conveys the information of poverty alleviation through the offer act, then through the close-up shot and medium angle, not only shows the improvement of people’s living condition in detail but also form an equal and friendly relationship between the audience and people in documentary. Finally, high modality also makes the documentary more authentic. In compositional meaning, it mainly uses left-right composition to provide the audience with new information, giving them a deep understanding of poverty alleviation. Secondly, the key points of the images are highlighted through the salience, such as position, size and color, to attract the viewer’s attention. Finally, the connection of framing reflects the harmonious relationship between the participants of the images. Based on the above analysis, this study suggests that we can use appreciation, expansion and force resources to expand the dialogue space, using factual data to give viewers a positive feeling in films with similar themes. Enhance the interaction between the audience and the participants in the documentary through the narrative process, close-up shot, medium angle and high modality.

This study enriches the research of positive discourse analysis and has implications for telling China’s poverty alleviatio
